This Month

This month in English the sophomores are studying A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah. Students are tracking the literary devices that Beah uses to tell his story of loss and redemption in the 1990s when he was drafted as a child into Sierra Leone's civil war.

Chuck Leddy of The Philadelphia Inquirer commented: "It would have been enough if Ishmael Beah had merely survived the horrors described in A Long Way Gone. That he has written this unforgettable firsthand account of his odyssey is harder still to grasp. Those seeking to understand the human consequences of war, it's brutal and brutalizing costs, would be wise to reflect on Ishmael Beah's story."

My stressed out life

The year was 1950 and life was great well at some points it was there was good days and there were bad days. I lived in Memphis Tn. I was 15 when all the trouble started. At the time I was doing bad I started to hang out with the wrong people and I did this to take all the stress away. I started to hang out with the greasers and they did lots of crazy things. There were bands that we liked bands such as Johnny cash, Elvis Presley, chuck berry and little Richard there are many more. The crew and… Continue

Sitting, sitting, just sitting with those four walls. Those four screaming walls. That's all I had ever done, all fifteen years of my life, sitting with those walls. sitting with the family. The family did other things, while the entire time all I had done is sit. Sitting, watching, listening. I was there but never truly there all at the same time.

Until that day, that day something happened that got me thinking. I didn't even know I could think, thinking was only something I had heard of… Continue

As the days drag on, so does my life. My life continues to be nothing more than routines and false accusations I make about others around me. What more is there to life than to go on and suffer quietly? The sound of parlors ring from each house as I pass by on my way home each night from work. Is this really what life has come to? To people sitting in a cave whose walls dance so vibrantly with color? Maybe it’s just how society has been trained to deal with their pain. Maybe they can’t handle… Continue

Assignment Choice #1 My stressed out life

Hello fellow people my name is John Smith I am usually very stressed out over many things that are very hard to explain. To escape my stress I will usually go outside and go walk around until I find someone to talk to this usually makes me relive a little bit of my stress and gets some anger out of me. Usually the things that stress me out in life are me being bored in life and not being able to go do what I want to, people who destroy our town and burn our books so that we can’t even expand… Continue

Will Digital Information Eradicate Books and What is the Danger of Living in that Society?

Lately it seems more and more magazines aren't selling their copies at newstands, drug stores, etc. and are now posting their information on websites. Do you think that books/magazines will be eradicated from being published and be put on websites to view from your computer? Also, what are some dangers that could come about if no one was able to read a book in their hands and be only able view the information online? What would happen to our society?

In response to the video "Nothing's Happening"

One one hand, the video shows us how much less dependent we have become on libraries and books and how we have come to an age where instead of finding a book about a topic, we can just search the topic on the internet. There was a time about 10-15 years ago where the only "scholarly" sources that existed were from professionally written books and textbooks. Now we have entered a new age where those books are seemingly useless considering that I could find the same, if not even more useful, information on the internet.

On the other hand, this video shows us how unreliable and seemingly useless books and textbooks have become. Text books, like the one shown in the video, only offer a few short sentences about a certain topic. In our World History textbook, the great philosopher, Socrates, was described in one small paragraph. If I were to search the same topic on the internet, I would not only get an enormous bundle of information about Socrates, but I would also discover minor things about him that were not included in a textbook. Things like: his last name, his family, his dog's name, his exact birth date, and so on. Books have become obsolete as of now. Even with simple things like this Ning, we can have a class discussion... at home! With online technologies like Zoho, the Ning, or the Wiki, we can not only find useful information, we can turn in our homework at home; we can ask questions from home; we can hang out with friends at home. So many possibilities have been opened just because of what the internet has done for our education.
